Master Classes for Aspiring Musicians
October 23-30, 2011
In addition to all the fun activities on the SuperCruise, we have organized three multi-session master classes for aspiring musicians, led by SuperCruise artists. Learn how to play the bass, compose a song, or play the sax, under the tutelage of renown artists Gerald Veasley, Vinx, and Walter Beasley. All classes take place on the ship and are free and open to all registered SuperCruise guests. See below for descriptions of each class.
Bass BootCamp at Sea
Hosted by Gerald Veasley
Explore the world of bass with Gerald Veasley, as the performer and educator brings his three-day Bass BootCamp to the SuperCruise. Whether you are a seasoned bassist or have never played before, Gerald will plug you into the joy of bass playing - technique, theory and of course, those funky bass lines! Joining Gerald will be Richard Waller III, accomplished drummer and producer, providing in-depth instruction on the art of the groove. Instruction is hands-on, up close and personal. Bring your own electric bass or if you're a beginner and don't have an instrument, play one of our Ibanez basses!
Prepare to be informed, inspired, and invigorated at Gerald Veasley's Bass BootCamp at Sea! Are you ready to go the distance?
New for 2011!
The Songwriter's Soul Kitchen
Hosted by Vinx
Discover the artist in you! Through three interactive work sessions exploring the art and process of songwriting, singer/songwriter Vinx will lead discussions and invite guest artists from the cruise to lend insight into their own creative process. Participants will be divided into collaborative songwriting teams to write, record, and perform an original song with Soul Kitchen producers during the cruise.
We expect that participants will take away:
- Deeper understanding of an artist's creative self
- Greater sense of songwriting options
- Memories of a live performance of songs written
- A studio demo of written songs
The Joy of Sax
Hosted by Walter Beasley
Aspiring saxophonists are invited to join recording artist and Berklee music professor Walter Beasley for this master class. The clinic is held in three sessions, which will cover the following topics:
- Mouthpiece placement
- Diaphragmatic breathing
- Improvisation: Learning major and minor pentatonic scales and how they are used in contemporary jazz
- Pacing: Learning to use what you know to present the best solo performance possible
During the final session, students will participate in a jam session with Walter Beasley and his band. Students will perform for each other using the topics learned in day one and two.
All classes are subject to space limitations. Additional information on the classes will be provided to registered SuperCruise guests prior to the cruise. Class offerings subject to change without notice.
